MAZPA 5th Field Training Course at Zoo Melaka

MAZPA organized a comprehensive Field Training Course for our members animal care staff. The 5th course was held in August at Zoo Melaka with a total of 34 participants which included participation from SEAZA members, namely 2 from Singapore and 4 from Thailand.

The course took place over ten days and concentrated mainly on the biology, husbandry and management of a number of different animal groups housed in local institutions. A large part of the training is practical and teaches a variety of skills (such as restraint and enrichment) which can be utilized by staff when they return to their own institution,

All course material and teaching costs were covered by the host zoo with MAZPA meeting the costs of food for participants. Participating institutions were responsible only for their travel and their accommodation. For Non-MAZPA members a registration fee of RM500.00 per head was charged.

The course were once again very successful and MAZPA would like to thank En. Nawayai Yasak (formerly Director of Zoo Melaka) and their staff for their financial and administrative support in the organization of these events.

MAZPA 6th Field Training Course at Zoo Negara


Malaysian Association Zoological Parks and Aquaria (MAZPA) organized 10-days Field Training Course for animal handlers, trainers, keepers and staffs involve in the day to day animal management including of behaviour, husbandry and enrichments from 26th October until 4th November. 5 external speakers invited to conduct a series of lecture session were Dr. Kevin Lazarus, Ms. Claire Beastall, Ms. Mazwin and Ms. Ariati. 35 participants from Zoo Taiping, Zoo Melaka, Animal Concern Research and Education (ACRES), Butterfly Farm, Sunway Wildlife Park, Penang Bird Park, Aquaria KLCC, Zoo Johor, Sarang Buaya Pasir Gudang, Zoo Kuantan, Taman Tumbina, Taman Sabah and Underwater World Langkawi staff attended this seminar. MAZPA 6th Organising Committees would like to thank to all the facilitators and special appreciation to the dedicated zoo staff for their hard work during the training course.

MAZPA 7th Field Training Course at Zoo Taiping & Night Safari

This year, Malaysian Association Zoological Parks and Aquaria (MAZPA) organized the 7th Field Training Course for animal handlers, trainers, keepers and zoo staffs in Zoo Taiping & Night Safari, Perak. This 10-day course which ran from 11th until 20th October covered aspects in the day to day animal management including biology, husbandry, management and enrichments. The six speakers from various organizations invited to conduct the series of lecture sessions throughout the course were Dr Kevin Lazarus (Zoo Taiping & Night), Dr Choy (Zoo Taiping & Night Safari), Dr Danial Felix (Zoo Negara), Dr Mohamed Reza (Aquaria KLCC), Ms. Ariati (Underwater World Langkawi) and Mr. Junaidi Omar (Zoo Negara).

50 participants who attended this annual course included representatives from 20 organisations including Zoo Taiping & Night Safari, Zoo Negara, Department of Wildlife & National Parks (DWNP), Zoo Melaka, Zoo Johor, Sarang Buaya Pasir Gudang, Underwater World Langkawi, Wildlife Park Langkawi, Penang Butterfly Farm, Bukit Merah Laketown Resort, A’Famosa Animal World Safari, Taman Teruntum Kuantan, Mini Zoo Kemaman, Aquaria KLCC, Sunway Wildlife Park, SPCA Selangor, Taman Tumbina Bintulu Sarawak, Animal Concern Research & Education (ACRES), Singapore Night Safari and Khao Kheow Open Zoo, Thailand.

These participants’ background ranged from managerial level, veterinarian, officer, curator, trainer and keeper. This course divided into two sessions: lecture session and field session. The topics covered were “Why Zoos?”, “Keepers’ Role”, “Diets and Feedings,” “Health & Hygiene”, “Pests”, “Record Keeping”, “Zoo & Education”, “Enrichment, Biology, Husbandry and Management of Animals From Different Classification”.

The MAZPA Committee would like to convey its thanks and appreciation to all speakers and participants for the knowledge-sharing experience throughout the course.

MAZPA 8th Field Training Course at Zoo Melaka


The Zoo Melaka hosted the 8th MAZPA Keeper Field Training Course in October. This annual training course was conducted to equip participants on animal husbandry and enrichment as well as ethics and welfare of animals in captivity.

EDU staff conducted a-day session on ‘Keepers’ Role in Education’ aimed to enhance skills of interactive session with zoo visitors among the participants. The participants gained new knowledge in way of delivering the information during practical session and group discussion.

MAZPA 9th Field Training Course at Zoo Negara


In October, Zoo Negara hosted the 9th MAZPA Keeper Field Training Course for 50 Malaysian zoo keepers. The 10-day course was conducted to equip participants on biology, animal husbandry, behaviour and enrichment as well as ethics and welfare of animals in captivity. The course includes a series of lectures, field sessions and discussions.

The 4th AMAZED (All Malaysian Zoo Educators) Conference


During the course, the Education staff conducted a one-day AMAZED conference to share the inputs of zoo education, public awareness and promoting the zoo. The theme was ‘Speak up for Wildlife’ focused on engaging public to become wildlife ambassadors and deliver conservation messages to others. The participants shared similar interest during presentation.

MAZPA 10th Field Training Course at Zoo Taiping & Night Safari


The 10th course was held in October at Zoo Taiping & Night Safari with a total of 35 participants which included two participation from Singapore Night Safari.

Once again, the course focuses on general husbandry and management, physical restraint and enrichment of mammals, birds and reptiles. Many sessions were practical and took place in the field. Teaching was carried out in Bahasa Malaysia and English, The course conducted by curatorial, veterinary and other senior staff from within MAZPA’s member zoos. The cost of the course and materials once again fully covered by MAZPA.

The MAZPA would like to thank our fellow facilitators during this 10-day course namely Dr Kevin Lazarus, Dr. Danial Felix, Dr Ridhwan, Ms. Mazwin, Mr. Musnarizal, Mr Junaidi, Mr Gerard, Ms. Doreen, Ms. Ariati, Dr Jessie and other senior managers within MAZPA's member.

The 5th AMAZED (All Malaysian Zoo Educators) Conference


This AMAZeD Conference 2016 was held on 17th October during the 10th MAZPA Field Training Course with 35 participants and speakers from various organizations : Zoo Taiping & Night Safari, Lost World of Tambun, Perak, Entopia by Penang Butterfly Farm and Zoo Negara Malaysia.
