Enrichment Seminar at Zoo Negara

Environmental Enrichment Seminar was held to increase awareness on how environmental enrichment can act as a medium to provide better welfare for the animals. This was also in response to the new act that was enforced by the Wildlife Department in 2010 which focuses on enrichment for captive animals.

The Environmental and Research Seminar was held at Zoo Negara Malaysia on 16th - 17th May 2012. Two days seminar was filled with activities. First day started at 8.30am with participant's registration, followed by opening speech by Deputy Director; Dr. Muhammad Daniel Felix. The invited keynote speaker from Department of Wildlife and National Park (DWNP) was Mr. Shamsuddin Othman (DWNP Principle Asst. Director of Law and Enforcement Division). He mainly focused on the relation of Wildlife Conservation Act 2010 (Act 716), emphasized on animal welfare, which highlighted the need of enrichment for animal kept in zoo.

The seminar continued with presentation from Wildlife Enrichment Centre Officers. The presentation part covered in this seminar were 'What is Enrichment' by Miss Faradilla Ain, 'SPIDER Concept' by Miss Norhidayah, and three enrichment ideas focusing on our three selected Malaysian wild species which are the Malayan Tiger by Miss Riffa Mulyati, Malayan Sun Bear by Miss Nik Nuradzimah and White-handed Gibbon by Miss Hadayu. This seminar also got participants to involve actively in sharing opinion and ideas about enrichment during seminar presentation, grouping, assignment and project session.

There was also a practical session where the participants had the chance to apply the knowledge that they acquired during the presentations. They also presented the enrichment items to selected species such as the Malayan Tiger, White Handed Gibbon, Elephant, Malayan Sun Bear and the Malayan Porcupine. During the last session, there was a group presentation where the participants would evaluate and share their project with the others.

It was such a great time when all participants from all over Malaysia gathered at Zoo Negara to share knowledge, ideas and experience. For this 2 days seminar, 29 participants were involved from Zoo Negara, Zoo Kuantan, Zoo Taping, Zoo Johor, Underwater World Langkawi, Aquaria KLCC, Penang Butterfly Farm, Langkawi Wildlife Park, Lost World of Tambun, Matang Wildlife Centre and Sarang Buaya Johor.
